Simin Karimi
With a 1989 Ph.D. in theoretical linguistics from the University of Washington in Seattle, Simin Karimi is currently a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Arizona. She served as the department head in 2011-2016 and the in terim department head in 2007. In addition, she has been the Chair of the Iranian Linguistics Research Team since 2015 in the same department.
Investigating the Structure of Iranian Languages: Current Research and Prospects
Iranian linguistics is a growing field in terms of the increasing number of linguists conducting serious research in this area, the variety of languages under investigation, and the theoretical and empirical approaches taken by researchers. The Iranian Linguistics Research Team at the University of Arizona, formed in 2015, exemplifies this growth. In this talk, we will introduce and briefly discuss different branches inside the Iranian language family. The main focus of the presentation will feature the goals and accomplishments of this research team. We will discuss important similarities among the Iranian languages we have conducted research on, and interesting microparametric differences between them. We will conclude by showing how the examination of this important language family, whose members are mostly understudied at best, opens up new venues for innovative research projects, and thus significantly contributes to linguistics and allied fields by enhancing our understanding of the nature of Human Language.
